JAPANESE  ANTARCTIC   BASE

JapanSwoyaStationpicci.jpg (29122 bytes)

The history of Japan's Antarctic involvement goes back to 1910 when the "Kainan Maru" left Shibauru (Tokyo) on the 29th November bound for the Antarctic. A small team of 10 led by Lieutenant Shirase reached the Bay of Whales before returning to Japan.

In 1956 (December 20th) the vessel "Syowa" departed Japan and early the following year the Japanese opened their first Antarctic base naming it "Syowa" after their vessel.
