MARIO ZUCCHELLI STATION

Mario Zucchelli Station was previously the Italian Station in Terra Nova Bay and was simply known as "BAIA TERRA NOVA". However in 2004 following the death of Mario Zucchelli, the recently retired Italian Antarctic Progamme director it was decided to give the station its own official name. the photo above by Lucia Simion shows the station with the volcanic Mount Melbourne prominent in the background. |

The above postcard was brought back to New Zealand on board the "Italica" and posted through the Ross Dependency Agency where it was postmarked with their Paquebot cancellation. The postcard bears both a station and a ship cachet. The view at left shows a high aerial shot of the Station in summer when the sea ice has gone. |

Note: The above postcard commemorates the feat of the Norwegian Rune Gjeldnes who this season made the longest ever crossing of Antarctica from the Norwegian Base to the Italian Base via the South Pole. The above postcard was taken down to Mario Zucchelli Station on the "Spirit of Enderby" which collected Rune from Mario Zucchelli Station and brought him back to Bluff in New Zealand. It has been postmarked on arrival in Christchurch of mail from the ships voyage. |
