HEARD ISLAND
Heard Island is situated in the southern Indian Ocean and is dominated by an active volcano called Big Ben. The island is administered by Australia as a scientific and wildlife reserve. In recent times the waters around it and the nearby Mcdonald Islands have been the focus of some pirate fishing. From time to time the Australian Antarctic Division organises major research expeditions to the island. |
