One of the distinctive aspects of working in the Antarctic is the need for warm clothing to keep out the cold, the biting wind and the occasional snow.  When wrapped up in bulky clothing it then becomes difficult to recognise people both individually and as to what group, team or expedition the person belongs to. This is particularly the case with the Americans at McMurdo who use coloured clothing to distinguish scientists from support staff, air crews from expedition members, workers from VIP visitors etc. New Zealanders working at nearby Scott Base also like to distinguish themselves both from other New Zealanders and from the 100's of Americans passing through Williams Field Airport Facility.  We also list below some Australian Antarctic patches, some from the Italian Antarctic program plus a few other odds.

To aid this identification and as a sign of pride in the organisation to which they belong many groups have also adopted distinctive patches which are worn on their clothing usually on their shoulders or sometimes on their breast pockets. The following patches are all authentic machine embroidered patches as worn in the Antarctic.
