HDMS (Her Danish Majesty´s Ship) Vædderen is an Offshore patrol vessel belonging to the Royal Danish Navy. She is designed to protect Danish sovereignty over the waters around the Faroe Islands and Greenland. She was launched in 1990 and entered service in 1992.

The Vædderen had been refitted at Karstensens Shipyard A/S in Skagen, Denmark and sailed from Copenhagen in August 2006 on the Galathea 3 Scientific Expedition.

The Galathea 3 Expedition

In August 2006 the Danish inspection vessel 'Vædderen' (The Ram) embarked on a 34,000 nautical miles voyage taking the ship around the globe. The Galathea 3 expedition combined scientific research with a public information initiative. This expedition follows on from the success of early Galathea Expeditions.

King Christian VII sent the corvette Galathea on a mission from 1845 to 1847 to explore the Nicobar Islands and to arrange the transfer of the Danish colonies in India, Tranquebar and Fredriksnagore, to the British East India Company, and to negotiate new trade contracts in China.

Just over 100 years later, from 1950 to 1952, Galathea 2 was a deep-sea oceanographic mission.

For Galathea 3 the Danish coast guard vessel, Vædderen, was the base for 100 people,  including scientists, media representatives and crewmembers on a nine month long expedition..

The first ports of call were the Faroe Islands and Greenland. After this the ship sailed through the Mediterranean Sea and the Arabian Gulf to the Bay of Bengal and the Indonesian Archipelago and then to the Solomon Islands before reaching New Zealand on the 8th of January, 2007.
