KAPITAN KHLEBNIKOV

The photo above shows the "Kapitan Khlebnikov" in fast ice near the Amery Ice Shelf.
The "Kapitan Khlebnikov" is a Russian Icebreaker based in Vladivostok which also now operates tourist cruises in the Antarctic (as well as the arctic) for a variety of western companies.

KAPITAN 4 1999 (March 9th) Paquebot autographed Postcard from Ushuaia. US$10
Note: The above card was carried on board the vessel from Hobart to Ushuaia in Argentina via McQuarie Island and various other bases. This was an official voyage of the Australian Antarctic Service (voyage 3.4). The card is signed by Rod Ledingham, the official AAT observer on the voyage. On arrival at Ushuaia the AAT stamp has been treated correctly as a Paquebot item.

Note: The above cover postmarked at Casey bears a World Weather Watch cachet as well as a special Antarctic cold waters sticker at lower left. It has been brought back from Casey by the "Kapitan Khlebnikov" and has the usual Airmail cachet of Kapitan Khlebnikov.

Note: This card also has a Local post stamp as well as a Ross Dependency stamp which pays the postage on the card which was posted through the Ross Dependency postal agency in Christchurch.
