The "Akademik Sergei Vavilov" was launched in 1988 at Rauma in Finland for the Soviet Union as an ice class oceanographic research vessel. She is a sister ship to "Akademik Ioffe".  Based at Kaliningrad she first took tourists to the Antarctic under charter during the 1992/93 season.  She has 8 apartments, 34 single and 43 double cabins.  All cabins are outside looking.  She carries six zodiac landing craft.
